This was a great analysis. I liked specially the part of feminine Vs masculine perspectives, never thought about looking at midsomer like that before. Yeah watching that movie felt cathartic until I actually started thinking: What did they actually do wrong? Christian was emotionally unavailable, a dickhead but I can understand his position. Josh invaded their privacy in the name of research and renown, and the vaping fella who's name I always forget committed taboo and disrespectful acts which leaves the protagonist and the viewers feeling a kind of second-hand embarrassment, like how the one obedient kid might feel when the other kids are going round leaving graffiti somewhere. The British couple protest something that is genuinely upsetting and sickening, a normal reaction to have as far as I know. They all committed some small transgression and the viewer is left feeling like their deserve their pretty gruesome deaths. But I guess that's what fascism also does, the people it targets may commit some transgression (even just protesting something unjust) which is then used as an excuse to imprison them or kill them.

What got to me though was the idea that because Christian was maybe kind of a shitty boyfriend, who despite wanting to break up with someone he saw as clingy and a little messed up stuck with Dany through the worst trauma you can imagine going through with any kind of partner, that somehow he deserved what he got. His horror at what he was doing - and you cannot argue that he enjoyed what happened in any way - is visible as he moves into the room, surrounded by women in a ritual he does not understand but is unable to stop. Christian's sin was that he was a kid who didn't love Dany, who wanted to break up but didn't because she'd just gone through this awful thing in her life. I was horrified at the ease with which Dany was willing to let him go, to give up his life because his perceived infidelity had so wounded her. She was groomed by the cult to give him up, to cut him away and view him as disposable because now she was surrounded by people who loved her, who honored her, who felt her pain as Christian so obviously could not, did not and never would. It was for this sin that Christian and all of the cult's victims were sacrificed. My horror at this movie was that Christian, and the others by proxy, was given such short shrift by Dany and by the viewer. Oh, we are meant to think, he was a crappy bf who was going to leave her so TORCH THE ASSHOLE! Christian had done nothing to Dany beyond not love her. For that he gets screwed by the cult girl, by the cult, by Dany and by the audience. I'm a woman and I was horrified by what reviewers and commentators said about Christian and the lack of examination regarding the suitability of his ultimate fate.
